Cleaning Job

Confessions of a Serial Interviewer by Steven Ra Ga

The confusing time you went to an interview about cleaning gamers desks.

I saw an ad online for a Jr. Game Developer and thought what the heck. I applied. I did attend the college where lots of these people came from but I didn’t have a degree or any experience.

I got called in for an interview and it was for one of the biggest companies on the planet for this kinda stuff.

My interview was with two ladies.

The whole time they talked about the job, it didn’t even remotely match the job description, until I asked them to clarify what was going on.

Ultimately they told me because I didn’t t have the experience the only job I could get was a “runner” it was basically an unofficial, unpaid, cleaning staff position that was like a prerequisite for any job at the company. The term was like 6months.

Talk about a bunch of rich assholes swinging their dick around.

Like living in one of the most expensive cities in the world how the fuck would I pay rent during this time period.

Needless to say the job was gonna happen.

You basically just clean up after the Developer team, put glassware away etc. like hazing at a Phrat house.

I did ask what’s the longest someone stayed at that job and the answer was “he’s still there.” A lifer, I hope he gets paid.

When I got up to leave the interview, I asked if there was somewhere I should put my glass of water they answered “the runners get that just leave it.”

Now I needed a job badly, but I am not very good at being subservient to people. I am kinda vindictive and could easily see myself doing something to get back at such types of people.

They didn’t call me back for the role, I don’t blame them. Dogged a bullet there.
