The CoWorker

Observations of a Serial Interviewer by Steven Ra Ga

Do you have one of those coworkers you aren’t 100% sure is who they say they are?

They have a lot of stories that sound too wild to be true and it’s as if they memorized them all, so no details change.

And when they start going it’s like story after story after story and before you know it you just need a break or to go in your quiet place and get some rest.

I have one of those.

Early in the week my Coworker asked if I could help him move his house on the weekend. To which I replied sure, I didn’t really want to but I had nothing planned and I thought why not.

He originally told me his friends had canceled and gave me the impression he didn’t have enough people.

Honestly just hire someone it’s like $600 you get 2-4 people and they are insured if something breaks.

Anyway today he asked for my personal cell number, I informed him he could just call me on my work phone, to which he just ignored me until I gave him my number.

When I asked who would be there he told me he had 4 other people helping…

I paused.

Then I said 5 people? How much stuff are we moving?

No response.

Then inquired about footwear thinking I might need my steel toe boots.

He explained I didn’t need them… I am bringing them… I didn’t bring them.

I have been analyzing his performance at work and have come to the conclusion he is some kind of psychopath or social-path he seems like he is harmless but hard to say. I guess I will find out tomorrow for moving day.

He is a good 5’6” I am over 6’ I hope all his friends aren’t 5’4” that will be awkward when moving things… his friends were various heights, friendly had the look of pirates.

I get the feeling he just wants to show off his trophies like that Netflix show The Shrink with Will Farrel. He did have lots of pictures in frames they were well done but not as much I thought he would have.

Okay so it wasn’t as bad as I thought. I had an image in my mind but what I saw was more of a controlling thing.

They guy would spend too much time rejigging and rearranging the items to put in the truck halting the line of bringing items in and out. For the most part it looked like a motley Crüe of helpers and the items were supper strange. A bit like Jim carry in the cable guy where is party was all his clients Type of feeling.

He had giant vinyl posters that had no retail value, small boxes of star wars items loosely placed around, swords wrapped in blankets, and furniture from a turn of the century. There was no beds or couches, common items seen when moving stuff.

It felt more like we were moving his personal items as though he were a bachelor everything from sci figurines to man cave bar stuff… a tad strange.

I say strange, as I have helped many people move over the years this by far has to be the strangest move out of everything…
